The major events of the 20th century were characterized by devastating political experiences of wars and totalitarianisms that were born out of the shifts in philosophical, social, political and economic ideologies and movements across many regions of the world. During this time in history, communism took root in many states where people took control of the economies in order to establish a communist society that was based on a social economic order that was structured upon common ownership of the means of production and elimination of social classes, money and the state (Kelz, 2016). At the beginning of the war in early 1914, many German and English philosophers argued that world war is a wonderful idea and expressed a lot of optimism and enth usiasm at the mention of the issue. The idea of World War I led to the diffusion of party differences and class antagonisms at the call of national duty and many intellectuals were happy of the rebirth of idealism. The Russian Revolution The Russian revolution is another historical event that was driven by the philosophy of bolshevism that was driven by the desire to transition the society from extreme capitalism to socialism. During Russian revolution, workers engaged in endless battles for power in order to forever the then tyranny of the ruling class elite and the misery of exploitation. The philosophy of bolshevism had a significant impact on the behavior, attitudes and actions of many people during the Russian Revolution an ideology that symbolized peace, land to the poor and industry control to the workers (Perry Bock, 2013). Cinema History the Seventh Seal Free Essays

Ingmar Bergman’s film, Seventh Seal, reflects his views on life in an allegorical fashion. Bergman utilizes the setting of a medieval, plague-ridden landscape to metaphorically investigate the existence of god and meaning of life. The film follows the knight, Antonius, as he returns from the Crusades with his squire, Jons. The film’s vivid imagery and powerful score challenge the viewer to interpret the film’s messages and assign them meaning. The film investigates the deepest philosophical questions of humanity. Compared with Akira Kurosawa’s film, Ikiru, the Seventh Seal expresses a darker outlook on the world. Bergman’s cinematic masterpiece remains a relevant work of art in a world that struggles to address the deepest questions of religion and the phenomena of simply being alive. Seventh Seal begins with a shot of the heavens as a powerful orchestrated piece of music plays. A passage from the Book of Revelation is recited, â€Å"And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour,† (Revelation 8:1). Antonius and Jons lie on a beach of pebbles. The land is framed proportional to the sky, juxtaposing the kingdoms of heaven and earth. A chess set sits to the right of Antonius. The camera pans away from him, zooming in on the chess pieces. It symbolically equates Antonius as a piece of the game. A man cloaked in black approaches, revealing himself to be death. He states that he has come for them. Antonius challenges him to a chess match. Death agrees that if Antonius is able to defeat death he shall go free. The game is continued throughout the film. As Antonius and Jons move along their journey, death continuosly lurks as an ominous force. The film constantly makes references to death and uncertainty through the presents of the plague. The sky in the background is often cloudy as though God is absent from the heavens and oblivious to the suffering on earth. In one scene, Jons seeks directions from a man who appears to be sleeping; the man is dead and rotting. Not only is the man unable to provide direction, but there is also no divine direction. The plague represents the absence of God and humanity’s uncertainty when faced with unexplainable destruction. In a scene later in the film, death impersonates a confessional priest. He listens as Antonius speaks about the mystery of god, stating, â€Å"Is it so cruelly inconceivable to grasp God with the senses? Why should he hide himself in a mist of half-spoken promises and unseen miracles? What is going to happen to those of us who want to believe but aren’t able to? † Death, who embodies the complete absence of life, remains silent. Bergman depicts mans suffering, metaphorically addressing the inabilities of humanity to comprehend the purpose of both the human self and the divine. The plague challenges faith, as an incomprehensible punishment inflicted for unexplainable reasons. It leaves the populous to deal with the absence of divine direction. This is demonstrated very powerfully throughout the film. Jof and his fellow actors dance and sing on a small village stage. The actors represent innocence and good nature. Abruptly, religious music interrupts the actor’s production. A procession of priests, baring crosses and incense, marches though the village. They sing in unison as shirtless men accompanying them whip themselves and each other. The entire village drops to its knees as the horrifying parade of suffering passes. This demonstrates the absence of God. The religious, unable to comprehend the suffering that is the plague, torture themselves in an attempt to appease God. This phenomenon is continued when Antonius witnesses a young girl tied to a post. She is deprived of water and whimpering in pain. The authorities believe her to be bewitched by the devil and the cause of the plague. The girl is to be burned alive. This event communicates the true horror of humans left to suffering and doubt. The actor Jof and his wife Mia represent natural beauty and good nature. The scenes with them bring a warmth and happiness to the, dark suffering depicted. The lighting is often softer and brighter around Jof and Mia, contrasting them with the bleak atmosphere of the film. Antonius befriends the actors, and they all share a picnic of milk and wild strawberries. The simplicity of this meal is symbolic. It represents the beauty that exists in simplicity itself. Antonius reminisces about his life before the Crusades and his love for the wife he left behind. He expresses his ongoing burden of faith stating, â€Å"Faith is a torment did you know that? It is like loving someone who is out there in the darkness but never appears, no matter how loudly you call. † This statement embodies the questions presented by Bergman throughout Seventh Seal. The Seventh Seal concludes with Antonius knocking over the chess pieces in order to distract death from Jof and Mia. Death claims Antonius and his companions as Jof has a vision of them in the distance doing the dance of death. The viewer is eft with powerful messages concerning the existence of God and meaning of life. Comparing the film with Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru, it is apparent that both share similar ending themes. The protagonist in each film pursues a selfless action. In Ikiru, Watanabe, the protagonist, abandons the bureaucracy he has been a part of for so long in order to fight to create a local park. The Seventh Seal depicts the game of chess between Antonius and death. Antoni us knocks over the pieces, allowing his friends to escape. Both films protagonists fight for things bigger than themselves. Bergman and Kurosawa explore similar themes, but the Seventh Seal maintains a darker outlook on the world. Imagery on Othello Essay Imagery on OthelloIn William Shakespeares Othello, the use of imagery andmetaphors is significant in conveying meaning as it helps to establish thedramatic atmosphere of the play and reinforce the main themes. Throughthis, the audience is able to grasp a better understanding of the play. Throughout Othello, images relating to poison frequentlyoccur. These references are predominantly made by Iago. This seemsappropriate for Iago who exhibits the characteristics of poison; they beingfatal and deadly. There are several possible explanations to what motivatesIago: being overlooked for being the lieutenant, the belief that Othelloand Cassio had committed adultery with his wife, though this is neverreally proved; class differences present in the society that made him feelinferior and racial differences. This desire for revenge is so great itdoth, like a poisonous mineral, gnaw his inwards. Iagos use oflanguage is a primary weapon in manipulating Othello. By pouring thispestilence into his ear, Iago contaminates his thoughts. Once Othellostarts to doubt Desdemonas fidelity, he is so incredibly driven byjealousy that it leads him to murder her, ironically with poison. Many references are made to animals in the play. Iago usesbeast imagery to express his contempt and to downgrade those he despises. Early in Act 1, he stirs Brabantios anger by using crude images of animalsfornicating to inform him that his daughter and the Moor are now makingthe beast with two backs. Such a metaphor is designed to evoke a strongemotional response. In a soliloquy at the conclusion of Act One, Iago saysIt is engendered. Hell and night / Must bring this monstrous birth to theworlds light. Shakespeare uses the image of a monster being born as ametaphor for the start of Iagos evil scheming. It also becomes evidentthat Othellos mind has been corrupted by Iagos evil handiwork when he toostarts to use the same sort of animal imagery in his speech. In one scene,convinced of his wifes infidelity, Othello loses all self-control cryingout goats and monkeys, animals traditionally considered lascivious. There is also a wealth of heaven and hell imagery in Othello. Iago, who isMachiavellian in nature and revels in tormenting others, can be perceivedas the devil personified. Even he himself acknowledges this when he saysdevils will the blackest sins put onsuggest at first with heavenlyshows / As I do now. Iagos manipulation of Othello causes him to seeDesdemona as devilish; therefore she must be brought to justice. Desdemona, though, is associated with images of light,heaven and purity, thus suggesting her innocence. Even in the last scene asOthello prepares to kill her, he uses a rose as a metaphor for Desdemona. This indicates that her beauty still has an influence over him as well ashis ever present feelings of affection for her. When at last Iago isexposed as the true villain and just before committing suicide, Othello,using another metaphor, compares Desdemona to a pearl that he has thrownaway. This is one of many times where she is referred to as a pricelessjewel. Throughout the play, the contrast between black and white isalso used as a metaphor for the difference between Othello and the Venetiansociety. Several references to Othello as an old black ram and far morefair than black indicate that even though he holds the distinguishedposition of a general, the fact that he is black still makes him theoutsider. Through the use of imagery and metaphors, Shakespeare is ableto generate a considerable impact on the audience positioning them torecognize the full extent of the tragic outcome as a result of Iagostreachery. The use of these images and comparisons effectively defines thenature of each character and explores central themes such as deception,race and jealousy.

The being was left to survive on his own with no knowledge or guidance. He made several attempts to befriend people. but everyone either ran from him in fear or attacked him. The being became educated and learned of his origin. After continuous rejections and hostility from society, the being decided to get revenge on his creator who gave him this pitiful life. The being murdered Victor's brother and Victor's friend. The being promised to stop murdering if Victor agreed to create a companion for the creature. Victor agrees to do so, but after close consideration and deep contempt for his actions, he destroyed the being that he promised to his creation. The being killed Victor's best friend and wife in protest, and left Victor to wallow in his misery. Victor vowed to avenge his friends' and wife's murders and he set out to find the monster. After an arduous journey following the beast (which has brought him to Walton,) Victor dies. The being, unable to bear his horrible crimes and his master's death, reveals his plans to commit suicide to Walton and leaves. After learning of Victor's self-destruction, Walton decides to end his voyage and he and his crew head south.

Also, he sells his gold watch, which was his grandfather’s, in order to buy a Christmas gift for his wife. â€Å"The Gift of the MAGI† addresses the true love between two people, e ven though they are very poor. The story states that â€Å"Della and Jim live at home. He is paid eight dollars per week. As such, they are poor. However, they love and cherish each other very much† (O. Henry 164). The Impact of Globalisation in the UAE UAE is the most globalised country in the Middle East because Abu Dhabi, emirates with huge oil wealth and Dubai with entrepreneurial skills was opened as commercial hub soon after gaining independence from British. Long before UAE had started opening up to free trade, free movement of labour and joint business ventures then the other countries in Middle East. So, when the trend of globalisation becomes clear in mid 1990s most of the Middle East countries are unprepared for the economic and political impact of globalization while UAE was all set for becoming globalised at least economically. It had never taken gobalisation as challenge but as opportunity from which they can have benefit. UAE was always prepared to do this without making any compromises with his values and tradition. Garden for the Blind In Sensory Design by Joy Malnar and Frank Vodvarka, a great garden is said to unfold like a narrative, a journey or a piece of music. My hope is that the Garden for the Blind located on the land south of Hume Hall will be such a garden. I think the Garden should be entered through the parking lot, since the ground there is the most level. I think there should be a wooden path with railings on both sides until the garden reaches it’s full width. The path should then change to asphalt or rock, but the wood railing should be continued for a few more feet. There could be an archway over the wooden path, wrapped in Jasmine vines, so that the entrance to the garden can be marked by such a smell. The unrailed but broad path should then travel through the garden. Although unrailed, a system, such as raised edges, should be set in place on both sides of the path, to indicate where it ends and the grass begins. The path will eventually lead to a substantially large fountain in the middle of the Garden. One will know when he or she is in the heart of the Garden when one hears the water, or even feels the mist on his or her face. The fountain should have a ledge wide enough to sit on, with railings to keep one from falling in. The fountain will be in the middle of a paved circle. The circle will have railings around it, except for when it is met up by one of the three main paths: the path from the entrance, the path to the gazebo, and the path to the exit. On the right side of the fountain (when facing it from the entrance) there will be a Gazebo. There will be steps leading up to the Gazebo, since it will be situated on the steep side of the hill. In what ways does Shakespeare make Duncan’s death dramatic? Essay

â€Å"Macbeth† is a tragedy filled with deceit, evil and ambition. However what makes this play so great is the way in which Shakespeare unfolds the drama to us. In the play â€Å"Macbeth†, Shakespeare makes the death of Duncan dramatic in many ways. A way in which Shakespeare makes Duncan’s death appear so dramatic is by the fact that his â€Å"loyal and trusted servant† is the one to kill him. This sense of irony heightens the drama as from the description of Macbeth, he would be the last person to expect this from. Macbeth is the hero of the play as well as being the villain and it is this dual role that makes the play seem so dramatic. Shakespeare adds a twist into the play by making Macbeth appear to be something which he is not. He is first presented to us as a loyal servant to the king and to Scotland. This is reflected by Duncan’s appreciative comments such as â€Å"more is thy due than more than all can pay† and the superlative â€Å"o worthiest cousin.† We are told that due to his heroic acts in the battlefield, he is going to replace the Thane of Cawdor, who has been deceitful, and betrayed Duncan. This tells us that Duncan has already been betrayed before. Macbeth is courageous and looks up to Duncan, to whom he sees it his duty to protect and honour. We find out that Duncan himself is not a fighter himself as he is unaware of what brutal things have happened on the battlefield because he says, â€Å"What bloody man is that? He can report, as seemeth by his plight† (Act 1, Scene 2, line 1) This tells us Duncan is the type of King who stays in his castle and leaves the soldiers do the fighting. There has been a civil war in Scotland, which indicates to us that Duncan’s kingship is being doubted, hence the reason for the Thane of Cawdor betraying him and thus becoming a traitor. We are also made aware of the central issue of the chain of Beings and the Divine Right of Kings. The order is God, King, Nobles and finally ordinary people. The King sees himself, as does everyone else, as God’s representative on Earth, and killing him is by far worse than killing an ordinary person. If the chain is ever broken chaos is said to break out and in this way Shakespeare makes Duncan’s death dramatic as by killing him, Macbeth will cause chaos because he is in fact murdering someone who has been chosen by God. Duncan is the King of Scotland. Recently there has been political unrest, and there has been an attempt to overthrow him. He is presented to us as a religious, innocent and naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve man. Duncan is seen as naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve. He says, â€Å"There’s no art to find the mind’s construction in the face†. (Act 1, Scene 4, line 11-12) This metaphor indicates to us that he is a naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve man. He is so innocent that appears that it will be easy for Macbeth to take advantage of him. Here he claims that one cannot tell by looking at someone what they are thinking. As he believes this, he makes no attempt to see through people. This makes us question his judgement as he had built â€Å"absolute trust† on a man that had betrayed him. This also makes the audience wonder whether he will be deceived again by the man that will take the The Thane of Cawdor’s position and therefore add to the sense of drama by giving the audience a sense of intrigue. Macbeth is in a dilemma whether he should or should not kill the king. This is all revealed in Macbeth’s soliloquy where he speaks alone to the audience, revealing his inner most thoughts. This is a dramatic way in which Shakespeare lets us know what the characters are really thinking. In this speech Shakespeare creates a sense of catastrophe by the language with which he gives to Macbeth. He recognises that he should not do the â€Å"deed† when he states that as the â€Å"Host† † he should against his murderer shut the door not bear the knife myself.† This poetic language makes us realise that Macbeth is sensitive and adds a sense of drama as it makes us more aware that what he is doing is greatly wrong. The heavy sounding d of â€Å"deep damnation† sticks in the audiences ears as Macbeth is sensitive as indicated by the poetic language. â€Å"Hath been so clear in his great office, that his virtues will plead like angels, trumpet-tongu’d, against the deep damnation of his taking-off† (Act 1, Scene 7, line 18-20) The imagery of angels telling heaven and voices like trumpets to cry out against the deed, which is not what he wants, and so he eventually decides not to do it. This makes Duncan’s death dramatic because it is such a huge decision to make and there is a ‘twist and turn’ in him making his decision, and the fact that Duncan is linked with religious imagery in the form of angels. Shows the impact of the death high lighting that â€Å"every eye† shall be affected reinforcing what a loved man Duncan is Act Two opens dramatically with darkness surrounding the stage and the audience in suspense as to whether or not Macbeth will commit â€Å"the horrid deed.† However, by the end of the scene, Macbeth decides to kill Duncan, after being persuaded by his wife. Lady Macbeth has ambitions for him. She wants him to be king and has always wanted this for her husband, and is determined that he fulfils his ambitions. She persuades him and tells him her plan. All Macbeth has to do is put it into action. This leaves the ball in Macbeth’s court. Everything is set up for him, and all that is left for him to do is commit the murder, which also adds to the drama. Lady Macbeth also adds drama as she waits downstairs waiting for Macbeth to report to her after he has murdered Duncan. This leaves us in suspense over whether he is going to follow his own will or that of his wife, and we are kept in suspense. Just before killing Duncan, there is another soliloquy. Macbeth imagines that there is a dagger in front of him, which is guiding him towards killing Duncan. He is ready to kill, and he is in a horrific state. All the evil things are coming together, and he is breaking the order. In doing this, he is going against the Divine Right of Kings, and is going against the whole world. There is darkness and Macbeth does not want the whole world to see how evil he is. When the bell rings, that is the point where he proceeds to murder Duncan, who once again has failed to read ‘the minds construction in the face.’ We are not shown the killing and in this way it appears more dramatic as we are left to imagine for ourselves. After killing Duncan, Shakespeare makes things more dramatic and this is shown by the language that Shakespeare gives to Macbeth to convey his sense of guilt. He tells his wife, â€Å"One cried ‘God bless us!’ and ‘Amen’ the other, as they had seen me with these hangman hands, list’ning their fear, I could not say ‘Amen’ when they did say ‘God Bless us’.† (Act 2, Scene 2, lines 29-32) Macbeth cannot pray, and this is shown to us when Macbeth is obsessed with his inability to say â€Å"Amen†, as he knows that he has been seen with his bloody hands after murdering Duncan. He is conscience stricken as he struggles to say â€Å"Amen†. Macbeth now feels cut off completely from God, and there is no longer a relationship between himself and God and because God has seen everything he has done, he can never turn to him again, and pray. Macbeth also feels haunted by a voice saying that he has murdered and will never sleep again, â€Å"Me thought I heard a voice cry, ‘sleep no more: Macbeth does murder sleep† (Act 2, Scene 2, lines 37-39) Now Macbeth thinks he hears a voice that is telling him that he will never sleep again. All this makes Duncan’s death so dramatic, not because of the way Macbeth killed him, but the consequences going through Macbeth’s head afterwards. Not only is Macbeth unable to pray, but now he is unable to sleep as well. Also the fact that Macbeth feels that not even an entire ocean can wash his hands of the deed, suggests a state of total damnation. He says, â€Å"Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash all this blood clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incardine, making the green one red† (Act 2, Scene 2, lines 63-64) Macbeth feels that not even an entire ocean can remove the guilt and wash the blood from his hands, and instead the countless masses of water will turn blood red, because there is so much of it, and the green sea a red sea. Macbeth’s guilt is expressed through the image of blood, and he believes no matter what he does or where he goes, the guilt will always be there with him. Macbeth finally admits how great the crime he has committed is, when he says, â€Å"Wake Duncan with thy knocking! I would thou couldst† (Act 2, Scene 2, line 77) Macbeth wishes he could turn back time. He wishes that the moment when he plunged the dagger into Duncan’s flesh never happened, and that he could make it disappear. He says that if it were possible to bring Duncan back to life he would. This seals Macbeth’s misery, and makes the death seem even more dramatic because the murderer himself is miserable and regrets killing Duncan.

One of these things is sports and the other is helping people. Basketball has been a part of my life for many years. Helping people has always been important but only recently have I been able to combine these two together. Being a Captain on the Varsity Basketball team in my school is very pleasing and puts much joy in my life. I love to be able to lead my team on to the court for big games and show them the right way of doing things. I try to set examples on and off the court. One example off the court is helping out the disabled kids in my school. My team and I put together a special basketball game for the disabled children in my school. This is only one of the great ways of helping out . I believe it is very important to help those who are incapable of playing sports. I can pick up a basketball and play a game at any time I wish. It hurts me to know that some kids cant that is why I try my best to make them feel special and show them that they can play with us too. At the Jewish Community Center, where I play basketball as well, we have Hanukah parties for the disabled children. We give gifts out, dance with them and play games too. It feels great to play with them and show them that theyre not much different then us, we all just want to have a good time. These events are truly special in my life and I hope it they are special for the disabled kids too. It takes time and patience to help disabled children and Im glad that my team, the J.C.C., and I were capable of helping out. Hopefully I can do more volunteer work or special events in college. Most people dont want to be bothered but once you see the smiles on these kids faces you know your doing something for a good cause and you and the kids feel like you can achieve any goals you set your heart on. Most commonly in the world, football (soccer) is generally the religion of many. This is not the case in America. The Americans are more focused on the sports they have invented, such as American football, basketball, and baseball. In the first chapter of his book, â€Å"A Variety of Religious Experiences† in â€Å"The Meaning of Sports,† Mandelbaum explains to you what these sports are like in America and how these sports affect the people as a general populace. Mandelbaum uses rhetorical tools such as ethos, pathos, and logos to enhance how well he delivers his points. In this essay, I will talk about how his rhetorical tools affect his arguments. Mandelbaum’s argument is more focused on presenting the information in a way to educate you. Most of what he says in the passage is generally researched information that you have to take his word for. I could have gone and searched them myself on Google, but Mandelbaum comes off as a guy that knows what he’s talking about, and it’s not like he made research to write these facts, it’s as if he just knows it off of the top of his head. â€Å"The industrial revolution brought to the United States and to the world modern methods of transportation, and on these, too, the emergence of team sports depended,† (Mandelbaum, 40) you can’t help but think that he lived through this and he realized what was going on. Americans adore sports and it’s something they take to the grave. It is a very logical point that it is a form of escapism, and returning to the blissful, childhood past that is when you played sports as a child as an implied insight on the subject. The rest is to be taken based off of Mandelbaum’s heavy reliance on his ethos here. According to Mandelbaum, nowadays, sports help with one of the most primitive needs as a human, the spiritual needs and the needs of the psyche. (42) The information is set up as a â€Å"take it or leave it† sort of situation for the reader, it is up to the reader to decide if his ethos is sufficient to believe his claims. Mandelbaum connects baseball, football, and basketball as a way to one’s past as a form of pathos. In my opinion, this is a phenominal explanation but the pathos isn’t exactly obvious since one must delve into what he actually meant. When humans are children, a huge part of their life is to play a sport. They will most likely join a team and carry it with them for the rest of their lives and that will always be the sport that they played. When that child, as an adult starts to play that game again, they will reminisce about the times they p layed the sport as a child. They will remember that baseball championship final and when he stood there with his bat, his heart beating and the way he got 3 strikes out and blew the game. Generally, it could have gone as a success or a disaster and either way he’s going to remember it because he is playing baseball. Mandelbaum states that â€Å"the word sport is related to â€Å"disport†- to divert oneself. Baseball, football, and basketball divert spectators from the burdens of normal existence,† (41) this supports his argument tremendously since it solidifies the effect of his pathos argument. He describes it as a religious experience, as if people take a mental pilgrimage into their soul. Since most of this piece of writing is focusing on logos to argue more, I think this is as pathos as it’s going to get. This is the one argument that can appeal to one’s emotion. It isn’t a bad one since anyone that plays sports can relate to it. As for the more sophisticated people, he relates this to the Odyssey with the team being the protagonist, facing many challenges to achieve a goal, and getting through those challenges (41) cause you to reminisce on how you did it. All The Pretty Horses Themes Cormac McCarthys novel All the Pretty Horses is considered to be a national bestseller not only because it has won the National Book Award but also because the author could touch upon a number of themes which are really close to all the readers. Such themes as the themes of good and evil, and human nature are the most significant in our life. Moreover, Cormac McCarthy shows some kind of a conflict between a man and a woman, between the rich and the poor. My goal in this research paper is to analyze all the themes conveyed by the author in his novel All the Pretty Horses and to prove the fact that this novel is really the greatest American novel of 20th century . To achieve this goal, I have organized my essay into several sections, two of which have some sub-sections. In the first section of my essay, I am going to discuss the authors style of writing which impressed both the readers and the literary critics. In the second section of may paper, Id like to discuss the numerous themes using the contents of the book All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. CORMAC MCCARTHYS STYLE OF WRITING AND ITS ROLE IN THE THEME PERCEPTION OF THE NOVEL ALL THE PRETTY HORSES Cormac McCarthys novel All the Pretty Horses, the first novel of his Border Trilogy, was published in 1992. All the readers were greatly impressed by his simple style of writing which was represented by the minimum use of punctuation, the absence of commas (in some places), dashes, semicolons, parenthesis, ellipses and quotation marks (especially in dialogues). The use of full stops is a standard use of punctuation in his novel. (Jarret) Most of the sentences are complex and long. In single sentences, the author describes numerous actions which are separated by a long chain of conjunctions. He minted a great deal of compound words which made his writing style unique. Id like to turn to most of them in my essay. Now some words about the main character John Grady Cole. A sixteen year old John Grady Cole lived with his grandfather on a small ranch in Texas. After his grandfathers death their ranch was signed to John Gradys mother, but she decided to sell it. The father of the young man was seriously injured in the World War II and he did not offer any help to his son John. So, the young man had no future in Texas and decided to go to Mexico. His friend Lacely Rawlins accompanied him. The Theme of Real Friendship. One of the main themes in this novel is the theme of good and evil. The main characters often run into both good and bad people. The sacred violence is shown throughout the novel. (Hall, Wallach) Of course, the best friends of them are the horses. What John Grady loved in horses was what he loved in men, the blood and the heat of the blood that ran them. (McCarthy) Lets recall the situation when John saw his horse Redbo in a stable for the first time after his jailing, Redbo whinnied and was very happy to see John again. As a matter of fact, the novel is focused on the horses. We can see how the characters of the novel catch and ride them, how they breed and rescue them. They not only talk about horses, they admire them and philosophize about them. Moreover, the horses are the main source which connects young people to nature. The horses represent a part of the beautiful landscape scenes which are described by the author in the best way. Also the horses help the main characters to escape from danger. The Theme of Inevitable Evil. The theme of inevitable evil is also shown by the author in his novel. Cormac McCarthy said that there is no such a thing as life without bloodshed and he proves this fact in his literary work. There are many examples of rage display, one of them is the following situation. John Grady and his friend Rawlings came to the La Purisima ranch. The young men were treated ill. Alejandra decided to use John as a so-called pawn in her rebellion. Rocha let the police to arrest the young men. Alfonsa fought against John Grady in order to get rid of the rage which was connected with her past. The young men could not believe that the members of two communities took concerted actions. They were thrown into the prison and blamed in committing a crime. These angry people were unjust to young men who were so innocent and could not do anything against their aggression. Rawlings decided to return home because he could not cope with injustice of human nature. John Grady tri ed to appropriate the violence which was inflicted on him and he wanted to take vengeance. He decided to return to San Angelo with two the most vital things he had his horses and his pride. (McCarthy) The Theme of Coming of Age. The other theme which is shown by the author in his novel All the Pretty Horses is the theme of coming of age. Cormac McCarthy represents the life of young people who rebelled against their family and found their love. For John Grady love is the main thing in his rite of passage. In San Angelo he was a stranger: his mother was indifferent to him, his father was a miserable ill man whose life was completely ruined. However, at the end of the story, we can see that this young man John Grady has got all the qualities to be a true hero who can easily be a good father to Jimmy Blevins, a rather dangerous boy, a passionate lover to the young girl Alejandra, a real friend to Rawlins. The most significant thing is that John Grady did not lose his faith. We can see a clever and an experienced man when he leaves San Angelo at the end of the novel. He returns to Texas a changed man but there is no home, nobody is waiting for him: his father is dead, his childhood nur se is dead too. The Theme of Competing Moral Codes. The theme of competing morals is also touched by the author in the literary work. Cormac McCarthy shows us the character of John Grady in such situations when he meets those people who are immoral. He fells his love for Alejandra in the context of right and wrong, Duena Alfonsa, Alejandras god mother, thinks quite the contrary. She wants John to leave Alejandra alone because Don Hestor will never permit her to marry a poor American young man. The captain and Emilio Perez repudiate the idea of tainted money. Moreover, they jeer the young mans opposition to pay for his way out of prison. It is clear that John Grady becomes a real hero not only due to his idealistic beliefs and his relation to life but also because he can give up his ideas in situations of restoring justice and saving life. For example, when Don Hestor asked John about his past, he did not tell him about Jimmy Blevins and the fact that he and his friend Lacey Rawlins may be on the wan ted list for the horse theft. The other situation takes place in the prison where John and Rawlins were taken. The young men are terribly beaten and John sees that Rawlins is seriously injured. John Grady kills a prisoner who attacked him and understands that the evil lives inside him too. Another situation which shows the moral codes of our characters is the last Johns meeting with Alejandra. He loved her, he wanted to be with her. However, she changed her decision and chose her family approval and life in the rich house. The Theme Of Love. Cormac McCarthy represents the theme of love through the relations of his main character John Grady Cole and a young beautiful girl Alejandra. Sometimes it seems that the author wanted to show the same story as William Shakespeare showed in his Romeo and Juliet. The young man John who was only 16 met a beautiful young girl Alejandra, the daughter of Rocha, at La Purisima hacienda where he and his friend Rawlins came to work as cowboys. The first time he saw her riding on a black Arabian horse and fell in love with her. She also fell in love with this young man. She invited him and his friend to the party where she danced with John. John found her hands tender and small and her waist nice and slight. In spite of warnings of Donna Alfonsa who protected Alejandra the young man and the young girl started to have rides at night time together, they went swimming at the lake together. They became lovers. She came to his room every night for a period of nine nights and they were happy to make love. However, then she returned to Mexico. John wanted to be with her and he went to Mexico City and found her there. However, Alejandra had changed. She said that she was afraid of her father who wanted to kill John. She decided to say no to John, and for the last time they made love in the hotel and then parted never to meet again. The Theme of Family Relations. Cormac McCarthy showed another important theme the theme of family relations by the example of John Gradys family. Such family relations affected his future and his character in a way. Johns mother left him when he was a baby. A Mexican woman took care of him and became his second mother. Johns father could not pay him attention because he was away taking part in the World War II but he taught him to love horses. Johns grandfather did not give the boy the parenting he wanted to get. The other character of the novel is Lacey Rawlins whose family was a poor one and he decided to escape and live alone. Jimmy Blevins, a small boy who was 13 years old, did not have a family at all. These young men needed family and were unhappy. Their unfortunate family relations had great influence on their emotional and psychological state. The Theme of Nature. The author pays special attention to nature in his novel. The beauty of nature described in the book helps him to show the characters attitude to the earth, horses, wonderful landscapes, lakes and rivers and reveal the best qualities of their characters. Johns relationships with horses show the close connection between nature and all the human beings. He had a long journey which changed him as a man. He experiences love and cruelty, theft and killing, prison and the system of justice. In each situation nature helped him to survive. CONCLUSION In conclusion, I should say that Cormac McCarthys novel All the Pretty Horses is really a great literary work which can teach us to love nature, to love our country and our family. It shows us how to fight with injustice and how to survive. I think that all the themes the author conveyed in his novel are still actual for the present day life. The author could discover human nature in his novel by the examples of main characters and their attitude to horses as a part of nature.
