The subject of this study is Evgenia. She is an 86 year-old woman living in one of the Jewish Federation Apartments in New York. She is not a native of America. She said that her daughter comes to visit her apartment once every week. When she does, she helps her with shopping. At times, her daughter also drives her to dry cleaners and to her doctor’s appointments. She also helps Evgenia find the stuff that she can’t find. Evgenia needs some help at times with organizing her things because she is completely blind. Evgenia became totally blind as a result of her Glaucoma. She was only 36 when she was diagnosed with the condition. To slow down the effects of the condition, she tried various forms of treatment for ten years. However, her condition did not improve. When not one of her treatment plans seemed to work, she decided to undergo a surgery. In 1975, she had an eye surgery in Ukraine but to her dismay, the procedure only made her condition worse. She first lost her vision on the left eye. Overtime, she could no longer see with any of her eyes. When she was 78, Evgenia learned that she has also developed Parkinson’s disease. However, she takes medication for her condition and noted that â€Å"It’s in control†. Evgenia also has Hernia but she explained that the condition hasn’t bothered her yet. Although most people who have Evgenia’s conditions are bed ridden and dependent on aides, this adorable lady isn’t. In fact, Evgenia is very independent. She wants to do things on her own and she doesn’t like it when someone helps her. She walks by herself, makes her bed, and bathes and dresses by herself. She even cooks on her own. Her condition doesn’t hinder her from reading for Evgenia knows brail. She reads a lot and on top of it, she also listens to books and tapes and answers crossword puzzles. She also knits a lot. She knits blankets, gloves, socks, hats, and more. To know where and which colors she will use for her knitting, she keeps her knitting basket in order. She gets by with her daily living tasks because she always keeps her stuff set up in a certain way that she knows where things are and what they are. Evgenia still has a very good memory that she can rely on. Elderly Care Set-up I. The need to move There are a variety of reasons why the elderly has to move away from his family. However, the most common reason is that the relatives are really incapable of caring for their elderly. Sadly, many people see the elderly as a burden. For Evgenia however, the case is quite different. Before she was admitted in the Jewish Federation Apartments, Evgenia lived with her daughter. Her family, as stated previously, was very supportive of her. The problem was that she was not comfortable with the place. Although she liked being around her family, she felt that she needed to be more independent. She noted that her daughter’s house was quite small. She described it as a â€Å"two-storey home with too many steps†, which is not favorable for someone who already had a hip replacement surgery like her. The place also didn’t have a home phone. Since the home was generally not conducive for the life of an elderly, she often hesitated – and even felt afraid – to be alone in the house. What made things worse was that she had no privacy because she had to sleep in the same room with her granddaughter. As such, Evgenia then told her family that she wanted to live on her own. Luckily, her daughter said that it was alright for she knew well how independent her mother was. II. Independent living and the patient’s experience Evgenia has been attending an adult day care, â€Å"Guilt Care†, even before she was living in the Jewish Federation Apartments. She goes to the day care at least five times every week. At the day care, she finds lots of things that she could do. Technically, it serves as a place for socialization and education. There, she knits and lets people read crossword puzzles to her. She also listens to concerts and nurses’ lectures on how the elderly can take care of themselves. She meets with a dietician once a week as well. When she decided to live on her own, she spoke with the social worker from the day care and asked for help. She was then referred to the Jewish Federation Apartments. This residence is open to the elderly, aged 62 years old or older. To be a tenant, Evgenia had to complete an application, furnish the requirements, and then have her request stamped and placed on the waiting list. At that time, she didn’t have Medicaid/Medicare and SSI. However, with the help of the social worker, she was able to get the insurance and the SSI qualifications. After a year and a half being on the waiting list, she finally got an apartment of her own. Now, Evgenia has been living in the apartment for a decade. She said that she is very happy there. Living in independent living community has some built-in benefits. The first of which was the fact that there are many seniors with whom Evgenia can socialize with. The second was that the features of the apartments were specifically designed to fit the security, comfort, and safety needs of the elderly. What Evgenia liked more about the Apartments was that it has a huge community room where different kinds of activities are initiated – from daily exercises to parties. Evgenia loves to play Bingo on Thursdays. Since the Jewish Federation Apartments is an independent living community, the place does not have a 24/7 medical support service, nor does it provide regular custodial care for the clients. The place is just exactly what Evgenia wants. Since she can take care of herself, she only requires her nurse aid to come only twice a week for four hours plus 15 minutes every morning on weekdays. When the Cold War spread to Central America and the threat of communism loomed over the US’s economic interests in the region they were given a prime opportunity to display their economic might by launching a series of funded government realignments; placing military elite leaders sympathetic to the US’s capitalistic, exploitive nature. In El Salvador foreign capital came pouring in to support the right-winged military dictatorship and to secure US interests in the lucrative Salvadorian coffee export economy. People were being mutilated and murdered in the streets by their own government, while the US did nothing. The initial denial of the atrocities that were taking place in El Salvador fed further denial and justified US aid in order to prevent the spread of communism and quicken the pace of â€Å"success† by the Salvadorian Army. Events like the massacre at El Mozote are directly linked to the United States inability, or, as it se ems, conscious choice to deny the veritable slaughter taking place in the country in order to protect their own economic interests. Though the US supplied the murderous Salvadorian Army with billions of dollars in military aid their worst crime was doing nothing in the face of the horrible human rights violations taking place. The US believed that by throwing money at the problem and turning a blind eye towards the massacre of innocent people the â€Å"communist problem† would solve itself. It did, but at a cost far greater and far more terrible than anyone could have imagined. The United States granted Salvadorian military aid in a number of ways. They continued flowing monetary aid and military arms into the Salvadorian government, even after various accounts of other dreadful human rights violations. Danner explains, â€Å"Given the geopolitical stakes in Central America, the United States had no choice but to go on supporting a ‘friendly’ regime, however disreputable it might seem, because the alternative – the possibility of a communist victory in the region – was clearly w orse† (9). The US was especially passionate about preventing the spread of communist ideals in Central and South America not only because of the regions’ close proximity to one another, but because the nationalization of domestic industries in Latin America (particularly coffee in El Salvador) would greatly harm the US economy, which obtained a huge amount of imports and raw materials from the region. As Danner explained the United States chose the lesser of two evils, in their opinion, by allowing vicious human rights violations to continue in El Salvador, as long the spread of communism was contained, ultimately protecting their foreign economic interests. Much of the Salvadorian Army at the beginning of the war was virtually untrained. Danner writes, â€Å"With Congress and the American public resolutely opposed to dispatching American combat forces in Central America, it had become quit clear that the only way to prevent ‘another Nicaragua’ was to somehow ‘reform’ the Salvadorian Army† (22). An American military advisor in El Salvador at the time also told Donner, â€Å"We had to reform or else we were going to lose. And it wasn’t because the guerrillas were so good; it was because the Army was so bad† (23). The United States sent more than just monetary funding and arms to the Salvadorian Army; they sent disciplined military training too. Various United States military trainers and advisors were sent to educate the Army in the American art of war. They also tried to wean them off of their current, what many American military men believed to be, lackadaisical military competence often heavily tied to politics (23). While this American military training helped it was the emergence of Salvadorian Colonel Domingo Monterrosa that turned the Army from a bunch of murderous monsters into a platoon of murderous monsters with discipline, order, and a common purpose. Monterrosa was described as, â€Å"a pure, one-hundred-percent soldier, a natural leader, a born military man with rare quality of being able to instill loyalty in his men† (24). Monterrosa’s men loved him. This coupled with his strong relationships with various military political rulers made him the driving force behind the Salvadorian army. It was because of his strong military leadership that the Salvadorian army was able to mobilize and, unfortunately succeed in their â€Å"leftist† purge of the countryside. Though the United States cannot be entirely to blame for Monterrosa’s unflinching brutality in Morazan, including El Mozote, they are the ones who trained him. He took courses from the American military while they were stationed in Panama, and studied anti-Communist insurgency tactics in Taiwan (24). That, on top of the vast amount of military aid granted from the US puts them in the forefront of responsibility for the events leading up to and the massacre at El Mozote and the massacre itself. Over the twelve year course of the Salvadorian civil war from 1980 to 1992 the United States spent over 4 billion dollars funding a fascist government that left over seventy-five  thousand Salvadorians dead in order to prevent the spread of communism and socialist ideals in one of the smallest countries in Latin America. Along with the training of military strongmen like Monterrosa, the United States played a vital role in the massacre at El Mozote. Not only did the United States aid in causing the massacre at El Mozote, but they also denied that the massacre took place at all. Rufina Amaya Marquez, the lone survivor of the massacre, witnessed it first hand, and while she had served as the most eloquent witness of what had happened at El Mozote Danner states, â€Å"†¦the Republican administration, burdened as it was with the heavy duties of national security, denied that any credible evidence existed that a massacre had taken place† (8). Although she had witnessed the massacre the United States refused to believe her, or at least, refused to give credit to her account in order to save themselves the public humiliation and scrutiny from supplying the resources that caused the massacre. United States Ambassador Deane Hinton stated, â€Å"Congressmen didn’t want to take the responsib ility to deny resources to the government of El Salvador and on the other hand they didn’t want to endorse it† (91). The US didn’t want to cut off aid to the Salvadorian government because they still wanted to protect their economic interests. At the same time they didn’t want to make it look as though they were endorsing the slaughter of almost a thousand civilians in El Mozote. So, instead, they denied the severity of the event in order to justify further aid. By questioning the severity of the massacre and blaming it on â€Å"blatantly biased journalists† the US was able to lessen the blow of public outcry about them endorsing gross human rights violations while simultaneously continuing the flow of aid to El Salvador in order to protect their economic interests. Finally, once it had become overwhelmingly evident that a massive amount of casualties had taken place at El Mozote the US government twisted the facts. In the Embassy summary of the happenings at El Mozote Greentree states, â€Å"it is certain that the guerrilla forces who established defensive positions in El Mozote did nothing to remove them [civilians] from the path of battle which they were aware was coming and had prepared for, nor is there any evidence that those who remained attempted to leave† (111). This horrific fabrication makes it seem as if the guerrilla forces are just as guilty as the Salvadorian Army in the death toll at El Mazote. Not only were there no guerrilla forces present during the massacre,  but also this depiction makes the civilian casualties seem like it was there fault because they didn’t leave the town and were caught up in the tactical fire between the two opposing forces. Washington’s publications of the massacre at El Mozote completely discredit the reality and the severity of the event. They even go as far as to place blame on both the guerrillas, whom were not present, and the citizens of the town, who were brutally executed. This was Washington’s grand propaganda scheme in order to save their skin, while at the same time continue feeding a murderous, fascist regime. By denying the events at El Mozote ever took place, the US proliferated the ignorance that allows future events like this to happen. Thus, the United States bears a remarkable deal of responsibility for the massacre at El Mozote because they initially backed the fascist regime, continued to pour military and monetary aid into the oppressive Salvadorian government, and eventually covered their tracks by deceptive publication and outright denial of the massacre itself. United States imperialism continues to be an oppressive force in foreign markets and livelihoods. In light of these activities, Gandhi declared a hunger strike until the fighting stopped. Eventually, it is decided that in order to end the killings and violence and the constant threat to both Hindu and Muslim lives, the Indian Sub-Continent will have to be divided between the two majorities. This partition led to the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The movie shows the resentment of the Hindus on the idea of partitioning their ‘Mother India’ in the form of train massacres and capture of migrants migrating to their respective homelands. The Muslims retaliated in much the same way. Gandh i tried to restore peace between the two newborn countries and as a result, received resentment for his actions from small segments of both countries, one of them eventually reaching close enough to assassinate him. Gandhi is shown as a non-violent, disciplined man with values of leadership that allowed him to be seen as a hero and a peaceful revolutionary who believed in fighting with words rather than guns and ammunition. He is joined by Mohammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan and it’s the first president, who is also shown as a man of revolutionary instincts. If they saw in the child any obvious deformations, or signs of weakness in response to simple gestures, it would be deemed unfit and ordered to be discarded on Mount Taygetus, the "Apothetae" (deposits). (Holland, P81). The purpose of this was to keep the Spartan population strong and free of disease. Although they would have had no idea what eugenics were, this was in fact an early form of the activity. As a result, only the healthiest of children would be permitted to live and, effectively, continue in their training. From this point on, the Spartan education and training regime, known as the "Agoge", would play a major role in the upbringing of all male Spartans. (Holland, P84). Rigorous military training would begin for males at the age of seven. To begin with, there would be an emphasis on the importance of the Spartan state, over any self-interest or desires. This continued throughout the training and ensured loyaty to the state first and foremost. (R.L.F. P.71). The boys lived in communal messes and were deliberately underfed to encourage them to steal food. With what food they did have, the Black Broth, which was a so... ...e a single arrow was fired, or a sword drawn. Such was the fear that they imposed upon their enemies, turning their blood to ice with the sight of their impenetrable wall of toughened soliders. (Holland, P76). In conclusion, I think it is clear to see that the unique approach to politics that the Spartan polis used in terms of structure had a significant influence at the time. Admired in their approach to raising respectful, sturdy citizens, they served as a model not just for the structure of a society but also for the development of one of the most important changes in the ancient world – professional soldiers. It could even be argued, I think, that the Spartan constitution was one of if not the first form of democracy, given the nature of the control over kings that the council of Elders had, who were themselves elected by members of the Spartiate population.

These are all emotions that are experienced by living things. Some of us are more susceptible to these emotions than others.In Homer’s Iliad, one of the main characters, Achilles, is especially prone to these emotions. His emotions vary from one extreme to the other. Despite being considered to be one of the stronge st warriors, a figure feared by the Trojans, Achilles isn’t as perfect as he appears to be. He is a man who is ruled more often by his emotions than he is by his brain. His emotions blind him to an extent and make his actions appear to be less than noble and portray him as a man with close to no integrity. The son of the King of Gods, Zeus, and the Nymph Thetis, Achilles is flawed deeply.In Book I, Agamemnon and Achilles quarrel with one another after Achilles suggests that Agamemnon return â€Å"bright eyed† Chryseis to her father in order to appease Apollo and to consequently halt the plague that is raining upon them. Enraged by Achilles suggestion, Agamemnon agrees to return the girl to her father, on the condition that he get another prize to replace the girl. Achilles argues that there are no gifts that are left to pass around, that once they pillage another town, they will compensate Agamemnon three times as much. This leads to an argument between the two men, wi th accusations flying around.Agamemnon perceives Achilles suggestion as a way for Achilles to obtain more gifts, and demands a gift of equal, if not more, value in return. Sharp-tongued Achilles retaliates, calling Agamemnon an â€Å"insatiable creature,† claiming that he has done nothing to offend the Trojans and yet here he is, taking part in a war that has nothing to do with him but everything to do with Agamemnon and Menelaus. â€Å"When we Achaeans loot some well-built Trojan town, my prizes never match the ones you get. The major share of war’s fury rests on me. But when we hand around the battle spoils, you get much larger trophies. Already there is a seed that has been planted within Achilles’ heart, a seed that will bear bitterness and anger as its fruit. In his anger, Achilles’ steps away from the war, taking himself completely out of the course of it, with plans to return to his home. Upon hearing this, Agamemnon threatens to take away Briseis , the woman that was given to Achilles. So overcome by his anger is Achilles that he debates ending Agamemnon’s life right there and then. While he is debating, Athena, who discourages him from continuing with his plan of murder, consoling Achilles that he will be richer than Agamemnon, visits him.Achilles retaliates with even harsher words to Agamemnon once Athena disappears, calling him a coward who sits behind the scenes whilst his men fight and die for him and vows to not take any part in the war from this point forth, for he has been scorned by the wordings of Agamemnon. When the men of Agamemnon come to take Briseis, Achilles gives her up without a fight, despite how heavy his heart is at the thought of losing her. Once she is gone, Achilles withdraws from his companions and sobs, praying to his mother to understand why he is treated the way he is, why he isn’t treated with respect.His mother, hearing his laments, comes to console him, telling him that she will v isit Zeus and try to sway him towards helping the Trojans and destroying the Achaeans, to make them pay for disrespecting the son of Thetis. This is just one of the many examples of how Achilles is ruled by his emotions, of how him being the son of Zeus and Thetis aids him in his goals and gives him an upper hand. He is favored not only by Athena, but also by Hera, and indirectly by Zeus, who tries to maintain neutrality throughout the course of the Iliad.There are various occasions on which the God’s interfere, each trying to help either the Trojans or the Achaeans. On more than one occasion, Thetis interferes on behalf of her son, trying to gain him some ground by calling in the favors that she has accrued. The first occasion on which she interferes is when she visits Zeus and tells him to give the Trojans a helping hand so that they Achaeans will suffer and see how they suffer without Achilles presence. She convinces Zeus and even though the Trojans march ahead, Achilles p ays a heavy price for his request. He loses his best friend, the person he is closest to, Patroclus.Thetis interferes again, when Achilles decides to join the war and avenge the death of Patroclus, and get his body back. She gives Hephaestus a visit and requests him to make her son a new armor. Hephaestus forges for Achilles a breastplate, a helmet and a shield that has images of dancing children, constellations etc. without asking any further questions. Despite being the son of two gods, Achilles is made painfully aware of the short amount of time he has left. His mother constantly reminds him that regardless of which path he takes; his time on Earth is limited.He can either go back to his home and die peacefully or he can join the war and die there. Other occasions on which the Gods favor Achilles is when Iris, sent by Hera, tells Achilles that he must go back to war, that his appearance will discourage the Trojans and cause them to leave behind the body of Patroclus. The same nig ht that Achilles decides to step back into the war, Athena robs the Trojans of their wisdom, causing Hector to reject the idea of retreating back into the safety of their city, instead, he insists on fighting more.It seems as if the Gods are changing how the war takes place, very well knowing what the outcome will be, by aiding Achilles. Even though the Trojans too, are favored, the scale seems to be tipped more towards Achilles, perhaps due to the fact that both his parents are Gods. This makes his relationship to the God’s quite unique. For the brief period of time that Achilles isn’t on the battlefield, he comes to the realization that despite the fact that the war has nothing to do with him, he is still the most feared figure on the battlefield. Achilles is the man that Hector fears, along with the rest of the Trojan army.Were it not for his quarrel with Agamemnon, Achilles would be fighting alongside his men, conquering the battlefield. Achilles is considered to b e a true individual because despite being portrayed as one of the bravest warriors, he is still flawed. Flawed in the sense that he feels every emotion to an extreme. He does what he feels is the right thing to do and on more than one occasion, contemplates disobeying the orders that have been given to him. Achilles feels that his skills amongst the other warriors aren’t appreciated and that he isn’t given the due he deserves, nor the spoils.His quarrels with Agamemnon prevent him from taking part in the war. He is scorned by the words of Agamemnon and his own beliefs of unjust treatment. He knows that if he doesn’t take part in the war, his men will lose the battle, yet he steps away. When the girl, Briseis, is taken from him, he mourns and seeks consolation as to why he is being put down and disrespected by his fellow warriors. He cannot fathom why, despite his accomplishments and his status amongst his own men, he isn’t respected. The seeds of bitterne ss have take root in his heart and continue to grow, filling him with despair and anger.Furthermore, when Patroclus is killed, he seems to almost disintegrate by the grief he feels for his loss. He blames himself for letting his pride and arrogance blind him. Perhaps if he had been there, fighting by his friend’s side, his dear friend would still be alive. It takes all but a nudge from Hera to push him back into battle and avenge the death of his friend. He is true because he is not a ruthless killing machine; he feels the emotions of love, grief and anger. Yet at the same time, these emotions get in the way and cause him to make decisions that would be otherwise considered careless or unwise.This is what makes him a true yet problematic individual. The reader’s response to the behavior of Achilles varies throughout the text. There are times when the reader feels sympathetic towards him, i. e. when he loses Briseis and Patroclus. However, there are also times when the reader can feel the air of arrogance that radiates from Achilles. Take into account when Priam comes to Achilles to ask for the body of Hector back, so that he can be given a proper burial and be mourned properly by his wife and family amongst other players.Achilles snaps at Priam after Priam makes a comment, warning Priam to not provoke him. Achilles persona varies from a vulnerable man to an untouchable man; making the readers response varies along with this persona. There are also moments when the reader is horrified at the train of Achilles thoughts. â€Å"I wish I had the heart and strength to carve you up and eat you raw myself for what you’ve done to me. † This vulgar statement to Hector appalls the reader, making the reader think twice about the kind of man that Achilles is.Furthermore, after Hector’s death, Achilles refuses to turn over the body to the Trojans or to simply leave it there; instead, he chooses to defile the body. He cuts through the tendo ns behind both feet, threads them with ox-hide thongs and ties them to his chariot, and then commences to drag behind his chariot the body of Hector. He also drags the body of Hector for twelve days, and each and every time, the body doesn’t decompose or suffer due to the Gods keeping it that way. It can be argued, whether or not Achilles is given the respect he deserves. There are men that follow him and support his decision to step away from the war.There are also men that abhor his decision, blatantly telling Achilles that his decision is selfish and will lead to the deaths of his fellow men. Throughout the course of the Iliad, the reader is able to see instances of divine intervention, and times when the heart seems to rule rather than the brain. Achilles is a strong man with a hard exterior. His interior, however, is a tangle of emotions, which lead him to make decisions that are foolish and careless. There are times that divine intervention seems to knock some sense int o him, causing him to veer in the correct direction, however briefly that may be.
